Sean and I are so excited to use this event in our lives to travel parts of the world and experience other cultures that we would not be able to afford to do otherwise. In many ways, this was the driving reason that we said ‘yes’ to this opportunity, and how I rationalize the thought of “Why?” in my head at the end of long, annoying, frustrating work days. We also want to afford the same opportunity to family and friends who wouldn’t have otherwise had the motivator or means to do some exploring without a place to crash and companions to split some of the costs associated with travel! As with anything in life, the best results come from having a plan… so shockingly (sarcastic), we have one.
Our plan is to make a list of all the places we want to visit and can get to within a reasonable amount of time and cost, and visit one destination per month (for at least a long weekend). However, our policy is that visitors always rule. So if we have friends or family coming over from the U.S. that are going to certain places already where we can meet them, or want to see a certain area that we’ve not yet been (and don’t mind our company of course) we will add or prioritize those. By the end of our 2 years I hope to replace the titles below with insightful, fun memories about each destination that will be captured in the form of blog post hyperlinks and serve as reminders of our experiences throughout the years ahead.
Highlight for the audience! within each blog post I will aim to suggest 1 cocktail, 1 recipe and 1 book that are tried, tested and inspired by our experience in case you want to do some European-inspired experimenting. We will be storing in our knowledge bank for improved entertainment value and enjoyment once we return to our home base.
So here’s our initial list (expect it to grow and change as we get suggestions from locals and read insightful articles)!
- London (to revisit old friends!)
- Spain (Barcelona, Ibiza, the islands)
- Prague, Czech Republic
- Germany (Berlin and Oktoberfest wherever that is)
- Athens & Santorini, Greece
- Italy (so many places in Italy!)
- Paris, France (so Sean can see!)
- Budapest, Hungary
- Innsbruck, Austria (so Sean can see and ski the alps)
- Dublin, Ireland
- Wine country, France
- Mountains of Switzerland
- Sweden (half of my roots)
Gratefully, we will have been through #’s 1-3 by the end of the year 🙂
For the peanut gallery: Any recommended additions or fond memories from any destinations listed above?
